Faces of our family

Being an active member of a church had always been important in Sis. Margaret Peggy Miller's life.

But as a young adult and mother of young children in 1986, she found she was only attending services on the holidays. Something was missing until her Aunt Lavinia Burton invited her to attend a Sunday service at St. Matthew.

"I felt Rev. Jackson was talking directly to me," she said of the late Bishop Reginald T. Jackson who was then pastor of St. Matthew. "I was mesmerized. He talked of applying the spirit of the heart to everyday life and living."

She said she had been to other churches but what she heard didn't apply to everyday life. "I kept wanting more and more of the teachings, the lessons."

And so Sis. Miller joined St. Matthew and has been an active member of the church for the last 40 years.

She has served as president of the Inspirational Choir and has been the YPD Director. Sis. Miller has been active in the Prison Ministry, the Senior Dance Ministry, and the Missionary Society. She is a Stewardess and active in the Drama Ministry.

And a few years ago, she took on another title. "I am known as the roll lady," she said. "I made a pan of rolls for a church activity and I have been making them ever since. I make them on holidays and special occasions."

"I have enjoyed immensely being in St. Matthew. People in St. Matthew are easy to love, and it's really a family."

Her daughters, Lisa Miller and Jessica Taylor, have also been active in St. Matthew. She is also very proud of her grandson, Cayden, who plays drums and sings in the Youth Choir.

Seeing all the children she worked with when she was active in the YPD grow up and become adults has been a joy to her. "I had a little part in that," she said.

Outside of St. Matthew, Sis. Miller enjoys crocheting, playing the piano, and babysitting.

Her spiritual goal is to love the Lord and be a good person. "I am very laid back. I will do anything to help you and get it done," she said.

"I am blessed when I get up every morning. I am blessed when I can say thank you for another day." She added that Pastor Wilson "is special. He's wonderful, intelligent, kind-hearted and takes time out for you no matter what."

Her favorite Bible verses guiding her life are Psalm 24:1-3 and the 23rd Psalm.

Sis. Miller shares this message when separating from a family member or friend and today is sharing with you, "Have a happy blessed day and stay prayed up."
